Product Design

This project was a collaborative piece. I couldn't have asked for a better partner, Milagros Sampietro. At first we had no clue what we wanted to do. This project was a "Product Design" which consisted in creating a new, fresh, and inventive design for travel. Since we have been working with the concept of travel we looked for a "loop" whole :). We figured everyone else in class was going to think about travel as flight or roadtrips. Milagros and I thought about travel within New York City. This was no easy task. We headed off to the MOMA (Museum Of Modern Art) to seek for inspiration. The picture on the lefthand side demonstrates 4 highly inspirational pieces, As clearly shown inspiration of circles within circles and finally a wheelchair. We brainstormed the following:

At first we came up with a design concept specifically designed for hat , and how to transport hats. (Picture on the left)This as most of you already know already exists, but we couldn't find a way to make it clearly stand out as different. So we kept on moving with sketches.
Our next compelling sketch was based on an accordion type looking square luggage box (picture on the right). Which could be adjustable to size and several compartments within the box. After analyzing the sketch we weren't convinced nor did we enjoy our sketch that much, so we kept on playing with the concept and re arranging it.

Keeping the same concept of the accordion we modified the shape according to our inspiration, meaning the luggage would be circular (picture on the left) and the same shape would enable the luggage to move. Making sure that the mechanism would allow the "wheel" to move but not the items within the compartment. It also had two handle ideas, a firm plastic handle or a cloth roll-out handle.
Then again we kept on pushing out design further to evolution it to something better.

Thinking about wheels! In the MOMA several children got stopped for riding scooters inside the MOMA, so we incorporated clothes hangers on a elongated scooter to transport groceries and other things.

The ideas moved forward and sparked more and more. One concrete idea we had was bicycles. We thought about what do New Yorkers use a lot as a means of transportation? and in New York, at least around where I live , I see CityBikes everywhere, so we thought if we could incorporate the third design within the wheels of the bikes, what a better way of transporting yourself on bicycles with a great amount of luggage you wouldn't regularly  carry on one.

Our final design! we kept on thinking about our inspiration and transportation. This idea sparked. Not many thing are designed for the handicap because they aren't the majority sometimes they are overlooked. So what we have decided was to create a luggage compartment within the wheel to make their travel easier. We played around with the idea a lot and came up with a final
concept which is on the right side

Color/Grey Studies

Color Color Color...

Color Wheel

Gradient with Paper

Gradient
The gray scale as shown on both sides of this text is a wide range of monochromatic shades from white to black or black to white. In art, white is the absence of color , while black is the presence of all colors. Always remember that a grey scale does NOT contain any set of color! The picture on the right is my first grey scale painted in acrylic paint achieving this grey scale was no easy task, it takes a lot of time and trial and error. After completing the painted grey scale my next task was to complete the picture on the left. Which was based on paper cut-outs in order to achieve a similar grey scale with the exception of painting the edges the mid grey on the right hand picture. Believe it or not all of these exercises help to understand color perception and the effect of black and white on colors.

‘A Cloaking Garment’

Project II- Set Within a Room in
The Wrightsman Galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Project II is inspired by the French decorative arts from the 18th century. A cloaking garment is a silhouette of your choice that blends in with the environment and acts like camouflage.

I was amazed by the blue and gold room. Full of detail, handcraft, and many different patterns.

Focusing on the flower patterns on the carpet as well as decoration of the chandelier I focused my design on flower. The difference was that they were somewhat abstract flowers.

"GRAPHIC/DIGITAL DESIGN BASIC CORE

In this introduction to visual communication concepts and tools,I learned the fundamentals of typography design and layout, as well as digital skills. Basic design and type exercises using Photoshop and Illustrator. Develop the essential design skills I need to produce. In this case a concept build around travel.

COLOR THEORY

Discover color and its implications for designers and artists. Study ideas of space and the use of color to solve spatial problems. Look at color harmony and the way colors interact, as well as color qualities and combinations."

Graphic Sketch
Concept sketches are crucial. The top sketch as well as the right sketch were two very different concepts. Thinking out of the box instead of literally doing a travel poster of a country or city destination I chose to approach this differently. To start off with , The top image was based on time travel, as to which the world known lingerie line Victoria Secret. Modifying this as a 60's Pin-Up idea. After presenting to the class, and absorbing the constructive criticism I chose to go with the left hand sketch. This is a different type of travel, its to the destination of the final concert of The Blues Brothers. Reducing the images to the iconic hat, glasses and tie. The displacement of all text had to be creatively placed in order for the viewer to travel with their eyes through the page in a coherent way.

So I modified the text into a vertical eye movement. In addition to using different shades of blue and black. Creating my final product below.
Graphic Final Desgin
Changing the Graphic product to a painting was challenging(shown on the bottom). In order to inform the audience about the Blues brothers performing in New York City I decided to change their iconic "ties" to an upside-down view of the Empire State. In addition to making it only one hat, one pair of sunglasses and one "tie" I also incorporated the color gamma so it could also have some sense of actuality having the sky bright blue subliminally stating one of The Blues Brothers passing
